The Same Change

One of life’s little ironies is that we’re constantly changing while searching for something that never changes.

People who stutter often look for certainty in speech. Will I be fluent today? Will I block? Will this conversation go well?

The answer, of course, is that none of us knows.

Yet many people continue to insist that speech must be predictable before they can live freely. That demand becomes another shackle.

Stuttering comes and goes. Confidence comes and goes. Fear comes and goes. Even fluency comes and goes.

Reality changes.

The person who is free is not the one who never stutters. The free person is the one who no longer demands certainty from an uncertain world.

Paradoxically, the less you insist on controlling your speech, the less your speech controls you.

That is how the shackles begin to fall away.
